Preparing for Work:

Work Adjustment

Jewish Vocational Service, Work Adjustment Employee Development Service is a comprehensive, individualized service designed to assist individuals with developing or reestablishing appropriate job expectations and work skills, attitudes, interpersonal skills, and functional capacities needed to be successful in community employment. Participants in this service are assigned a case manager who collaboratively develops an individualized program plan with the person based on their interests and vocational goals.

The participant works on jobs subcontracted with local businesses either within one of the three JVS Work Centers or in a long term Mobile Crews and participates in educational and skill development groups. Participants in this service can reasonably be expected to be referred to either a community based assessment, vocational assessment or Job Development service towards the primary goal of Community Employment within the next 12 months and may be extended by periods of 6 months at the discretion of the interdisciplinary team and the wishes of the consumer.

These services are available in both the JVS Cincinnati and Butler County offices.
Cincinnati — Program Manager: Keith Hammond, (513) 347-1528 or e-mail khammond@jvscinti.org
Butler County — Program Manager Robin Totsch, (513) 744-2502 or e-mail rtotsch@jvscinti.org.

Work Crews offers work adjustment in the community, as well as training in a specific job to persons with severe disabilities. Participants are placed in suitable jobs in the community that are supervised by JVS professional staff. The participant is trained to work effectively in competitive employment and learns both functional and behavioral skills that are appropriate for the particular setting. The goal of this program is to enable the participant to successfully function in competitive employment. Once there is progress toward that goal, the individual is referred for a mutually agreed upon job in the community.

These services are available in both the JVS Cincinnati and Butler County offices.

Disability Management and Employability Skills (DMES) teaches individuals to effectively deal with employment demands through involvement in in-group counseling and time limited community volunteer placement. Emphasis is placed on interpersonal and social adjustment to the individual's disability and how it affects one's ability to maintain competitive employment. A focus is placed on the inherent problems related to specific disability, and coping skills used to enhance the potential for successful employment.
