When speaking with a person with a disability, talk directly to the person, not his or her companion.

If you believe that an individual with a disability needs assistance, offer the assistance, but wait for your offer to be accepted before trying to help.

If you are interviewing a job candidate with a disability, listen to what the individual has to offer. Do not make assumptions about what that person can or cannot do.

If you are speaking to a person who is blind, be sure to identify yourself at the beginning of the conversation and announce when you are leaving.

If you are having a conversation with a person who uses a wheelchair, try to put yourself at the person’s eye level. Never lean on or touch a person’s wheelchair or any other assistive device.

But after only a few weeks as a JVS intern, she’s now considering a career in the nonprofit world, too.

“This has kind of opened my eyes to new things,” she says. “I’ve really fallen in love with Jewish Vocational Service.”

Cramer is one of 10 interns working this summer at Jewish community agencies in Greater Cincinnati through the Workum Fund Summer Intern Program.

Since 1987, many former interns have used their experiences as Workum interns as springboards for nonprofit careers. The internships are funded by the Workum Foundation, whose roots date back to 1917 as a program of the National Council of Jewish Women, Cincinnati section.

Cramer, of Blue Ash, a 2010 graduate of Sycamore High School, will be entering her sophomore year this fall at the University of Richmond. She’s studying leadership and psychology.

During her eight-week internship, she’s worked in various JVS programs and sites, including the Work Center and the Cincinnati Career Network in Blue Ash.

In her first week, she revised a cover letter for a CCN client’s job search, and he landed a job as a teacher. Cramer’s sense of satisfaction was immeasurable. “There’s nothing like helping a client get a job,” she says.

She spent a morning with consumers in Adult Day Services, a program that serves the recreational and social needs of senior citizens with developmental disabilities. She quickly developed a strong rapport and they asked her to return that afternoon. “They’d only known me for a couple hours but they didn’t want me to leave.”

Kim Slaton, a CCN career consultant, says Cramer has the potential to be a great professional for a Jewish nonprofit. She’s enthusiastic, organized and articulate, and has a get-it-done approach.

The internship is causing Cramer to realize she’s capable of more than she imagined. “I’ve learned a lot about myself,” she says.

She’s also learning how challenging the work can be. But she says it’s worthwhile and rewarding. “At the end of the day,” she says, “it’s all about helping our clients.”

And since April, that’s what he’s been doing.

With a passion for cooking, Stoner, 20, landed a job at Buffalo Joe’s Family Restaurant in Fairfield. And after only a few months, he had progressed from washing dishes and preparing raw ingredients to the added responsibility of cooking.

Stoner’s successful journey started when he was in high school. He realized cooking intrigued him, so he enrolled in the culinary arts program at Butler Tech High School.

Since his 2009 graduation, Stoner, who has a developmental disability, has been pursuing his goals with guidance from JVS programs funded by the United Way of Greater Cincinnati and the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission.

JVS arranged a temporary work opportunity in a country club kitchen. While there, he learned new skills and gained valuable experience.

With limited transportation options and limited work experience, he began a job search with help from JVS. Soon thereafter, Butler County started a new bus route, which expanded his transportation options. He landed the job at Buffalo Joe’s, working about 18 hours a week.

Stoner says he has become more focused because of the experience and guidance he’s getting at the restaurant. He realizes dirty dishes and food orders could quickly pile up if he allows himself to become distracted. “When we’re busy, there’s no time to mess around.”

Kenji Matsuda, Buffalo Joe’s co-owner, says Stoner has learned the importance of doing his job correctly and takes criticism well. With practice, he’s becoming a better cook. “I’m hoping he’ll cook more for us,” Matsuda says.

The job makes Stoner feel great. “I’m glad I have something to look forward to in the future.”

And years from now, he hopes to have achieved some other goals: going to college to study culinary arts and business, and opening a restaurant.

Now, with fewer co-workers, there are fewer distractions, making them more productive.

Matthew Cromer, 24, of Sycamore Township, loves the X-Plorers. Cromer had a difficult time focusing in the Work Center because so many things are happening at once. “The X-Plorers are more relaxing and laid-back,” he says.

The X-Plorers are funded by Hamilton County Developmental Disabilities Services and Medicaid. A similar program with 21 consumers exists at the JVS location on Harrison Avenue on the West Side.

“We wanted to provide meaningful activities and minimize behavioral problems,” says JVS Vice President Rich Davis. “Our consumers and staff are thrilled with the new program.”

Because of the program’s popularity, the number of X-Plorers has grown to about 20 since the group came together in October 2009. As a result, several times they’ve moved to larger rooms.

The current room is the size of a classroom.
Though we wish governments provided more funding for social services, especially during these difficult times, we do not expect government to solve societal problems. That’s why we’re thrilled that two key JVS funders have initiated long-range planning to better help the community.

The United Way of Greater Cincinnati this spring announced its Bold Goals, a plan designed to make sure residents are better educated, more financially stable and healthier. "Because the goals are so bold, the only way we're really going to be able to achieve them is by all working together," says United Way Chair Valarie Sheppard.

Likewise, the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati has been seeking broad input on a plan that would lead toward a more vibrant Jewish community, one that’s envied across the nation. It’s called Cincinnati 2020. Andy Berger, a Jewish Federation vice president, says “The plan is to have … all the organizations and synagogues in the community pull in the same direction and work to achieve this vision together.”

It is efforts like these that help JVS maintain its focus in challenging times, helping us empower individuals to enrich their lives.

How can you help?

Learn more about the planning going on at the United Way and Jewish Federation and consider getting involved: www.uwgc.org and www.jewishcincinnati.org.

Let us know your ideas about leveraging every resource to maintain the safety net for those with disabilities and other disadvantages.

All of us must continue to identify more innovative, efficient and effective ways to enhance the lives of those we serve.

Though the economy is improving, the State of Ohio continues to seek ways to aggressively slash spending to balance the upcoming budget. Inevitably, human services will be cut.

At Jewish Vocational Service, we’ve been identifying innovative ways to provide services to our consumers more efficiently and effectively:

JVS is a partner in Project Search with Cincinnati Public Schools, Butler Tech and the Warren County Career Center. It’s a national school-to-work program for high school students with disabilities. With the support of JVS job coaches, 60 students work at a community site performing various jobs that prepare them to find employment after graduation.

JVS works with six YMCAs to support more than 70 individuals making the transition from a sheltered work environment to competitive jobs. At the YMCAs, participants get paid to work part of the day and then can enjoy recreational activities the rest of the day to improve their functional and behavioral skills.

JVS collaborates with five organizations in a program funded by the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission. The program provides individuals with disabilities increased access to vocational rehabilitation services, leading to competitive employment for about 300 consumers

At JVS, we’ve recently completed another rigorous review to find even more ways to help our consumers achieve their goals by using our resources more effectively. Why? Because our consumers deserve our best efforts.

He’s headed to his job in Downtown Cincinnati." hspace="5" vspace="5" align="right" />Although many of his peers reside in group homes, Daniel Speights lives independently in an apartment with his girlfriend and works as a janitor.

Despite a developmental disability, Speights has made these huge strides with hard work and the assistance of Jewish Vocational Service.

When he first became involved with JVS programs about five years ago, Speights, a 24-year-old Winton Woods High School graduate, had trouble accepting on-the-job supervision. He also found himself easily distracted. Now, he’s conscientious and works with little supervision.

“He has come a long way,” says Yvonne Joe, his grandmother. “JVS has been instrumental.”

After high school, Speights was a dishwasher at a busy restaurant, then worked at a book warehouse. Neither job lasted long because he either socialized too much or found the work overwhelming.

Daniel then enrolled in a JVS program that teaches job skills, working for about four years on a crew cleaning the Powel Crosley Jr. YMCA in Springfield Township. With coaching, Speights learned how to do the job well.

About a year ago, it was time to seek a competitive job. Jeff Wesley, a JVS placement and retention supervisor, helped him decide which types of job he’d like and coached him through the job application process. Speights decided he wanted to pursue a cleaning job.

Wesley arranged for a job interview, and Speights was hired to help clean a Downtown Cincinnati office building five nights a week.

For the first few weeks, state funding subsidized his salary to give the employer an extra incentive to hire him. JVS provided a job coach for a month or so until Speights learned his new job.

Now, Wesley monitors Speights’ progress, but the JVS supervision he receives is minimal compared to what he received when he worked at the YMCA and when he first started his latest job.

He lives in a Forest Park apartment complex and takes a Metro bus to his job. He likes his two-bedroom apartment because it’s “peaceful.” He does some light cooking, washes his clothes and cleans the apartment.

Because he can hold a job, Speights not only has more independence and self-esteem, he also has choices, including what types of jobs he wants to pursue and what to do in his leisure time.

“He’s got interests, desires, hopes and dreams just like anyone,” Wesley says.

What’s even more impressive is that she’s paying her way through college by working. “Some people call me a workaholic,” she says.

But even workaholics need support. That’s why Rotbart appreciates the money she’s been receiving from the Hilb Scholarship Fund in a selection process administered by Jewish Vocational Service. The money she receives represents a small portion of her tuition, but she says, “Every bit helps.”

The Fund, managed by the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, has assisted students since 1955. Gus Hilb created the fund to honor his parents, Mannis and Yetta Hilb. Grants totaling nearly $175,000 are made to about 100 students annually.

Eligibility is based on financial need and academic standing. The Fund defines need as annual family income that does not exceed $120,000.

Rotbart, a Mason High School graduate, is studying fashion design product development. After her 2012 graduation, she wants to work in denim design or fashion research. She likes the creativity and practicality involved in her major. “By dressing people, I’m fulfilling an essential need.”

At first, her parents helped to pay for her education. But now, she earns much of the money she needs by working in UC’s cooperative education system. She alternates quarters when she takes classes with quarters working in a job related to her major.

Orly Amor, a psychology undergraduate at Ohio State, said Hilb grants have helped her avoid huge debt. “This has helped me be able to focus on my studies, rather than worrying about money all the time. It gives me peace of mind.”

Additional funding for her education has come from on-campus jobs, another scholarship program and her parents. After her 2012 graduation, she wants to pursue a masters degree in school psychology so she can be a school psychologist, helping children with disabilities and behavioral problems.

Dana Grinshpan of Loveland received Hilb money every year she attended Ohio State. The 2010 graduate still faces more than a decade of paying off her student loans.

But the Hilb money at least eased her financial hardships, allowing her to complete unpaid internships and write a thesis that included traveling to Israel for research. As a result, she graduated with honors with a degree in international relations.

Now, Grinshpan is a graduate student at the University of Chicago, receiving a full scholarship from the university. She expects to graduate this spring with a Masters of Arts in international security and political economy.

MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE HILB SCHOLARSHIPS

Jewish Vocational Service is accepting applications for the 2011-12 academic year until May 1. Discussion of the recession we currently face permeates throughout all facets of daily life it seems. Few of us have lived during a time when our community has suffered so much. At Jewish Vocational Service, we hear about it every day:

- People who once donated to food pantries are now going to the same food pantries for groceries.
- People who once lived comfortable lives are now losing their homes to foreclosure.
- People who once wore fashionable clothing have had to accept donations of business attire just to look presentable during job interviews.

Many are experiencing these problems for the first time. Some must cobble together several jobs to pay their heating bills or put gas in their car.
It can take more than a year to find a job, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. And for young adults, things are even worse. Even before the recession, the 2008 Cincinnati Jewish Community Study reported that nearly 40 percent of Jewish households with people under 45 said they were just managing or could not make ends meet.

Getting help finding a job is important, but the seemingly simple act of acknowledging the need for that assistance can be painful. And the effort to reach out for help is made more difficult by a lack of knowledge about where to turn.

A professional career consultant – someone who can enhance an individual’s job search skills – can be the answer. Yes, it’s important to have impressive work skills and a strong employment history. But here’s something that’s just as important: learning how to write an effective resume and cover letter, sharpening interviewing skills and polishing professional networking techniques.

Many come to Jewish Vocational Service for that help. Our Cincinnati Career Network coaches people in job search skills. We’re committed to helping people rebuild their lives whether they’re unemployed or underemployed, entry-level workers or top executives.

But we’re not the only ones offering such assistance. Other nonprofit and government agencies in Greater Cincinnati that can help are the SuperJob Center in Cincinnati, the Job Search Focus Group in Hyde Park and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Many colleges have career advisors for their students and graduates. In addition, private placement firms provide similar services for a fee. And the United Way of Greater Cincinnati has a telephone referral service (2-1-1) that can help with many needs, including finding a job.

Landing a job can be difficult at any time. But with unemployment soaring, it’s even more difficult now. Seeking professional advice can make a big difference.

Peter M. Bloch is president and Chief Executive Officer of Jewish Vocational Service in Blue Ash (he also rocks a bowtie!) Cincinnati Career Network is a JVS service.

Peter Bloch, JVS president and CEO, is serving as president of the Ohio Association of Rehabilitation Facilities. OARF, which is a nonprofit trade association based in Columbus, works to strengthen the resources of Ohio rehabilitation facilities and enhance their services.

Bloch’s role as the 2010 president has increased JVS’ visibility throughout Ohio and brought JVS closer to what’s happening in the state capital.

This year, OARF offered a best practices seminar presented by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, the national accrediting body for rehabilitation facilities. OARF also is helping members of the Ohio General Assembly and various state agencies by making recommendations to reduce the projected state budget deficit.

As he looked for a job in Greater Cincinnati, Brian Monk tried online job listings. Then, he used a headhunter. Neither approach worked.

But after contacting the JVS Cincinnati Career Network, he quickly secured a job.

“Working with Cincinnati Career Network certainly became a turning point in my job search,” he says.

Now Monk, 36, is director of operations for the Mayerson Jewish Community Center in Amberley Village.

And he recommends CCN. “They gave me the one-on-one attention I needed and helped me tailor a strategy.

CCN is making an impact. More than 90 clients have reported finding new jobs so far in 2010.

CCN, which receives significant funding from the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, advises and supports people looking for a job. It helps clients polish their resumes and cover letters, improve their ability to handle interviews, become more effective in networking and negotiate salaries.

The services are available to anyone in Greater Cincinnati. Clients range from top-level executives to minimum wage employees. CCN also works with people seeking part time, temporary and summer jobs.

“We help people move from where they are to a better place,” says Barry Wolfson, CCN’s manager. “Today, that may take a little longer than usual. But with our support and guidance, our clients are making progress in moving toward their employment goals.”

Because of the recession, demand for CCN’s services is soaring. So far in 2010, it has more than 130 new clients.

To deal with the increasing caseload, CCN has added workshops, allowing it to work with clients in small groups, in addition to the traditional one-on-one settings.

Monk says his career consultant oriented him to the style of the Cincinnati area business community, a more personal style than he had found in his prior job search in Atlanta.

“I could see that she didn’t see me as a case file. She treated me as a person with a unique skill set and background,” Monk says. “And she treated me with compassion, dignity and caring.”

A worker measures drywall during the JVS renovations.

When the JVS program participant first saw the finished renovations, her eyes filled with tears.

“It’s so nice,” she told JVS Vice President Rich Davis, who had been giving program participants a tour.

She was especially happy with the bright look of the break room. It was more spacious with many large windows.

Now, months after completion, JVS considers the renovation project a huge success, far surpassing expectations:

• All JVS program participants, many of whom use wheelchairs or walkers, now have sheltered access to the building using covered ramps and walkways, which lead to automatic doors.

• Open activity areas allow more flexible programming and better interaction among program participants.

• All Adult Day Service participants can gather in one large room to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays and holidays. Choirs, drill teams and magicians can perform for them with plenty of extra space.

“It’s just been easier for staff to keep up with the folks, to keep them safe and more engaged in their activities,” Davis says.

JVS made the renovations to its Rossplain Road building in Blue Ash to accommodate the changing demographics of the people it serves. Many have more significant disabilities and on average are older. Restrooms were expanded and upgraded, the size and shape of activity rooms was changed and energy efficient lighting was installed in the Work Center.

JVS did all of this with an eye to the future as it expects demand for its programs serving senior citizens to increase as the need for other programs decreases.

JVS also moved the Cincinnati Career Network, which provides career development services, into a larger area, with private offices and a conference room. It also added a computer lab for use by jobseekers.

JVS spent about $950,000 on the project, borrowing about half. It benefitted from low-interest rates and highly competitive bids because of the slowdown in construction work.

On any other weekday, Bernard Wiesen would be at JVS in Blue Ash, working as hard as he can on the assembly line. But today, he’s on a hay wagon ride, smiling and laughing.

Wiesen is on the monthly outing of the VIP group. The participants in the Vocational Improvement Program, run by JVS, have profound developmental disabilities.

VIP, which is funded by the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, organizes these trips for fun and social interaction. Past trips have included the Carew Tower observatory, bowling, miniature golf, the Cincinnati Art Museum and an annual cookout.

On this chilly but sunny fall day, six of the nine VIP participants are at Parky’s Farm, a demonstration farm in Winton Woods Park in Springfield Township.

Wiesen is amused because he’s on the wagon ride through woods and fields during Halloween season. The gravel road is lined with inflatable figures, including Disney characters and jack-o'-lanterns.

“He’s dead serious at work,” says Barry Essig, another VIP participant. “Get him away from the Work Center and he’s like this, joking.”

The wagon stops at a Pumpkin Patch. Each participant selects a pumpkin to take home. Then, they head toward the barn where they see a demonstration about making apple cider with an old hand press.

Outside, they brush a goat, who’s sitting on the ground, enjoying it, and they talk to a llama, who couldn’t care less that he has visitors.

Before heading back to work in a maroon-and-white JVS van, they’ll stop for lunch, which is always a highlight of their trips.

JVS Case Manager Jennifer Kouns, who has worked with this group for 10 years, calls the outing a success. “They just like to get out and explore,” she says.

Few of us have lived during a time when our community has suffered so much. Many are experiencing poverty for the first time – a phenomenon called situational poverty – caused by job loss, home foreclosure, serious illness and personal bankruptcy. These personal financial crises have dashed dreams of a better future.

It’s a hidden crisis, to some degree. We know from the news that we’re living through difficult economic times. But how many of us know what’s happening to our neighbors and friends, people who are suffering in silence, embarrassed to even ask for help?

Many come to JVS for assistance. And at JVS, we’re committed to helping them so they can start to rebuild their lives -- and their dreams. We empower individuals by providing the skills, knowledge and resources to put them on the path to work. Our services are broad, directed at youth and adults, people with disabilities and those who are unemployed and underemployed — from entry-level workers to top executives. Though we’d like to do even more, we’re proud that we have been able to make a difference for so many.

By John Johnston, in the Cincinnati Enquirer, September 25, 2010

Margie Selm can't take her friends to the ocean, so she's brought a bit of the ocean to them.

"These are sea shells," she says, showing off the former home of a clam.
"This is called a brain coral, because it looks kind of like a brain.
"This is a starfish."

Five people at her table listen and watch. They're all age 50 or older, and all have a developmental disability. They're among 50 people who spend weekdays in the Adult Day Services Department of Jewish Vocational Service in Blue Ash, where Selm has been program assistant for four years.

"I know exactly why I'm here," the 60-year-old Dillonvale resident says later, "Because they needed somebody not to take care of them, but to love them." It shows in the little things she does every day.

This morning's show-and-tell is a prelude to an arts and crafts project, during which Selm's group will transform construction paper, paper plates, glue, confetti and paint into turtles, starfish and sea horses - decorations for their upcoming luau.

When it's time to start cutting paper, a man in a Reds cap hesitates.

"You hold the scissors and I'll help you," Selm says. "We're going to go open and shut, open and shut." His hand works the scissors while she turns the construction paper.
"You did it! Oh, you did it!"
The man beams. He reaches for Selm, and she gives him a hug.

"I get tons of hugs," Selm says.

Virginia Gilbert, the agency's manager of seniors and therapeutic recreation, says the most important requirement for a program assistant is "you've got to have a caring heart, and be kind."

That's Selm. But it also helps to have plenty of energy.

Selm never slows. She's retrieving art supplies, assisting people at her table and later, at lunch, slicing sandwiches the way each person prefers, whether in halves, quarters or bite-size pieces.

She taught kindergarten for 15 years in Deer Park schools. She also cared for elderly people in their homes. Both jobs prepared her well for her daily tasks at Jewish Vocational Service.

In the Adult Day Services room, a stranger is bound to be greeted with friendly waves, smiles and a question: What's your name?

Everybody knows Selm.

One woman "has been giving me a piece of fruit every day for four years," Selm says. "She wants to keep me healthy."

A man who likes Barbie dolls refers to Selm as "my beautiful doll-haired lady."

Another man isn't shy about telling Selm when she should dye her short, blond hair.

Selm accompanies them on outings: to a bowling alley and swimming pool, to a pizza parlor to watch pies being made, to concerts and museums.

They went fishing at Stepping Stones, an agency that serves people with disabilities.

"They would throw the line in, and I'd twist my finger around it, and as soon as there was a bite, I'd jerk it, and then they'd reel it in.

"Sure enough," she says, "everybody caught a big fish. They were just ecstatic."

This day, the luau decorations are coming along nicely. Then someone notices that no two turtles are alike.

"Nothing's ever the same," Selm says. "We're all different, right? That's what makes us cool."

CINCINNATI, OH:--- Like many Cincinnatians struggling to find meaningful employment in an uncertain economy, Andrea Nadel—a recent college graduate who returned home from an internship in Israel several months ago— found few, if any, job prospects. Learning about Jewish Vocational Service’s (JVS) Cincinnati Career Network (CCN), Andrea called, seeking support and guidance from the program—which provides a wide range of networking, professional development, and individual career counseling services designed to help clients succeed in their job searches. “Cincinnati Career Network was a vital resource for me,” says Andrea, who found employment as a Planning Research Associate at the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati with the support of CCN’s staff and programs. “The strategies and tools that I learned have been incredibly helpful, and the dedication of the Career Specialists was crucial in helping me land my current job.”

Recently, volunteers serving on the Jewish Federation’s Planning & Allocations Committee’s Youth and Family Council made site visits to JVS in order to see first hand how CCN is meeting this critical community need. Council members Susan Brenner, Judy Schaengold, Dr. Judith Van Ginkel and David Schimberg met with JVS personnel and participated in two workshops as part of their work—which includes making allocation recommendations for the program to the Planning and Allocations Committee.

Dr. Judith Van Ginkel observed that, “The JVS Career Network is meeting an important community need—helping people negotiate a difficult labor market. The JVS staff is dedicated and committed to helping people at all income levels prepare for and find jobs.”

As national employment figures approach record high levels—and local unemployment figures exceed national percentages—CCN has intensified its efforts to help hundreds of community members of all ages, backgrounds and abilities identify desirable employment opportunities. “First and foremost, CCN is about helping the individual do what’s best for them to find a job,” said Barry Wolfson, Program Manager of the Cincinnati Career Network. “Our focus is on serving members of the Jewish community who are out of work or underemployed. This also serves the Jewish community by helping its members stay in Cincinnati, and either remain as— or become —contributors to community.”

Following the site visit, Youth and Family Council member David Schimberg said he was impressed with the work of CCN. “JVS’ Career network provides a critically important service to people in our community who are in a tough spot in their lives.”

Nearly 100 members of the community have committed themselves to experiencing first-hand the programs and initiatives for which the community’s agencies are requesting funding. It is believed that this deeper level of engagement—which will include input from clients as well as staff—will result in more insightful recommendations to the Planning and Allocations Committee and more efficient distribution of the Jewish Federation’s available funds.

###

The Jewish Federation of Cincinnati brings our community together to care for Jews in Cincinnati, in Israel, and around the world, and develops opportunities for each of us to embrace a Jewish life.

It also offers a discounted continuing education program for rehabilitation specialists. In addition, it lobbies state government, and its political action committee makes donations to political candidates.

Bloch has been on the association’s board since 2004. He helped the association lobby the Ohio Legislature during the latest state budget adoption process by testifying before the Senate Finance Committee. Several years ago, he helped make association membership more affordable by advocating for a sliding scale fee schedule.

Bloch’s term as the association’s president ends December 31, 2010.

Bloch said serving as president will increase JVS’ visibility and bring the agency closer to what’s happening in the state capital.

JVS, based in Blue Ash, primarily helps adults with developmental disabilities by providing training, work and other services, thus boosting their self-esteem and self-sufficiency. It has about 175 employees and serves several thousand people each year.

Bloch has been the top executive at JVS for 12 years. He is a past president of the International Association of Jewish Vocational Services and a past president of the Leadership Council of Human Service Executives in Cincinnati.

Bloch replaces Jim Schaum, former chief executive officer of Rehabilitation Services of North Central Ohio, who served as the association’s president for three years.

JVS held its Annual Meeting on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 7:00pm. Highlights of the meeting of the JVS Board included a Graeter’s-themed address by Cheryl Phipps, Superintendent of the Hamilton County Board of MR/DD. JVS President Peter Bloch reviewed the previous year for the agency. Beth Guttman, President of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, spoke to the audience. Outgoing Baord Chairperson Robert Clayton was recognized and thanked for his service to Jewish Vocational Service, particularly these past two years while serving as Chairperson. Incoming Board Chairperson Joel S. Brant was introduced.

Mr. Brant has been on the JVS Board for the past nine years, where he has contributed his time and service in numerous ways, not the least of which involves his vast legal expertise. His practice is concentrated in the areas of taxation and business law, wherein he handles a variety of matters relating to business organizations (quite a boon to a non-profit agency such as JVS). Mr. Brant joined the firm of Katz, Teller, Brant, and Hild in 1998, and he practices in that firm to this day. Welcome aboard Jody Brant!!

Thanks to all who participated in the JVS Annual Meeting including the speakers who donated their time. We thank all who were in attendance. We also express our gratitude to Tamar Smith for her role in planning and facilitating the Annual Meeting. We all enjoyed the review of 2008 and look even more forward to an excellent 2009!

On a windy, cold evening, the JVS Supportive Home Staff were honored to receive the Thomas H. Kidd Award for Excellence. The event was March 2, 2009, and it was the Hamilton County Board of MR/DD Annual Banquet at Sharonville Convention Center. The evening was already a night to remember with a record crowd, the fun of mingling with many friends at the Cocktail hour, and a delicious dinner. Jenn Jordan did a fabulous job of emceeing the event, and the adapted guitar group, Standing Room Only, provided memorable entertainment. When the time came to present the Thomas H. Kidd Award for Excellence, JVS Supportive Home Service was announced as the winner. With all the many quality programs and all the great providers in Hamilton County, to win this award is the honor of honors, and all of us at JVS wish to express our gratitude for the award and the excellent evening! For those who have not had exposure to the program, here is more information about Supportive Home Service. SHS started in 2003 with Virginia Gilbert and 1.5 staff. There were a handful of participants. There are now eight full staff devoted to the program and well over 50 consumers of service. JVS staff visit people in nursing homes, facilities like Drake Center, or private homes sometimes. All participants have severe medical needs that require special care. They can be served an hour a week, but some get up to ten hours of service per week.

Activities range from learning life skills such as cooking and cleaning, to learning shopping and banking skills. Some participants like for someone to just stay and talk to them or read the Bible to them. Some enjoy going on community outings. There is one new participant who went on a community outing to shop with JVS staff, and it’s the first time she had left her home in the past three years.

More than a program, it’s about relationships, getting to know a person, and helping them stay involved in their community. No one likes the prospect of growing old and being homebound. Thanks to Virginia Gilbert and the JVS Supportive Home Service, over 50 Hamilton County participants have options and a social life again. Their retirement years have some more options and dignity added.

This was the second time JVS has been awarded this honor during the past four years.
The following nomination reviews the activities undertaken and the positive result for persons utilizing these vocational services.

On May 1, 2007 JVS took over the vocational operation of a financially failing agency in Butler County, Ohio. The services assumed by JVS included the operation of two Employment Centers, several mobile work crews, transportation for over 100 consumers, and provision of work for two county board run sheltered workshops. This transition included service provision of one type or another to a total of 356 consumers, 106 in direct service provision, and an additional 240 to whom work was provided.

There were several initial goals set by JVS, all of which centered around assuring continued, uninterrupted and quality services for the individuals being served. These initial goals included:

To provide services at all locations without interruption or a decrease in program quality.

To ensure provision of needed supplies to complete work contracts appropriately.

To maintain relationships with all business customers to ensure continuation of work supply.

To ensure that all facilities and transportation services were run in a safe manner.

To maintain open communication with family members, residential providers, funders, etc. regarding changes between JVS and the agency that formerly provided services.

Part of meeting these five goals was achieved by maintaining most of the high quality staff that had been previously delivering effective vocational services.

During the past 9 months the successful transition and integration efforts have created a synergy that has positively impacted on services in both Butler and Hamilton Counties. Some recent achievements that have resulted from this synergy include:

Opening of the new JVS Employment Center on Symmes Road.

JVS has expanded employment center capacity to provide service for individuals pursuing work, that were formerly served by the Butler County Board workshops.

JVS has not only been able to maintain services without interruption, but has been able to do so in a way that minimized change and maximized continuity, assured ongoing employment for persons being served and for the staff providing the service, and secured future vocational services in the community for persons with disabilities.
